The Island Stroke Support Network provides meaningful connections for stroke survivors and their caregivers

CHARLOTTETOWN, PE, Oct. 20, 2022 - March of Dimes Canada (MODC) is pleased to announce the launch of the Island Stroke Support Network. Life after a stroke can bring many challenges, but with the right support, progress and recovery, joy and fulfillment are all possible. Building on the success of MODC’s After Stroke program, the Island Stroke Support Network will complement P.E.I.’s existing stroke recovery framework. Islander stroke survivors and their caregivers can now access one-on-one and group support, as well as assistive technology.

The Island Stroke Support Network connects stroke survivors and their caregivers with highly trained, caring volunteers who are also stroke survivors, for one-on-one virtual support. Volunteers will share their lived experiences with stroke to bring hope and information to participants as they navigate their personalized stroke recovery plan. Additionally, Stroke Support Clubs held at select public libraries will allow stroke survivors and their caregivers to share their experiences and practical advice with one another. Participants can also borrow iPads outfitted with assistive technology, including programs to help with aphasia and users will have access to technical support from MODC’s Assistive Technology Specialists.

“Stroke survivors have told us they need support,” says Christina Sperling, Director of Community Programs & After Stroke at March of Dimes Canada. “They need peer connections, opportunities to support one another, ways to engage with assistive technology, and information to address the emotional and practical challenges of their unique journey. By joining together with Health and Wellness P.E.I., and Health P.E.I., we are combining our strengths and expertise to benefit more stroke survivors and their families across the Island.”

Each year, approximately 350 people will have a stroke in P.E.I. For those impacted by stroke, there can be many challenges on their path to recovery. Stroke survivors and caregivers report experiencing high levels of psychological distress, anxiety, depression and social isolation. Peer support programs, such as the Island Stroke Support Network, are an important resource for fostering social connection and emotional support, and empowering people to rebuild their lives and achieve their goals after stroke.

“Strokes and recovery from strokes can be very difficult for both survivors and their families. Our department is pleased to support this program that will help improve outcomes and quality of life for stroke survivors,” said Ernie Hudson, Minister of Health and Wellness. “The supports in this network will change Islanders’ lives for the better.”

Delivery of our specialized Island Stroke Support Network programming is made possible through generous support from Health and Wellness PEI, Health PEI, and the tireless efforts of our highly trained, caring volunteers.
