March of Dimes Canada is launching an Employment project for Youth 


We invite you to share your perspective as a young person on your experiences with post-secondary skill building and programming when seeking employment. We want to learn about your needs, dreams, and the barriers that you face when looking for employment opportunities. Your voice will help us to identify programming gaps for youth. 

Who Can Participate? 


We are looking for young people who…
  1. Are between 18-30 years old
  2. Currently live in Canada
  3. Identify as a person with a disability 
  4. Have access to a computer with internet
  5. Have access to a private space

What is the purpose of the project?


The main purpose of the Creating Inclusive Employment (CIE) project is to improve and create new ways for young people to develop digital skills, like: 
  • Sending & Receiving Email
  • Content Creation using Microsoft Products (ex. Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Web Development Skills (EX. HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Computer Programming Skills (ex. Python)
  • Data Analysis
  • Digital Marketing
  • Mobile App Development

In doing so we will be able to expand on March of Dimes Canada’s (MODC) ongoing program improvement to create more inclusive employment opportunities as young people transition from school to the workplace.

How Can I Participate? 


In the first phase of the project, you will have the opportunity to participate in a World Café event, that will be held the week of September 16th to 20th, 2024. 

During the World Café, participants will meet virtually to discuss topics in small groups, then participants rotate through virtual ‘tables’ to cover various subtopics that are linked to digital skill development. The world café will be completed in one approximately 2-2.5 hour session hosted online via Zoom (with captions and other accessible supports, as needed).

Your participation will help us enhance our programming. As a special thank you, we will be providing you with gift cards.

Will I be Compensated? 


Yes, project participants will be compensated for their time, and contributions. All honoraria will be provided via gift cards. These will be sent to participants through EverythingCard, which is an online platform that allows participants to choose to receive either a physical or digital gift cards for a variety of businesses, such as restaurants, grocery stores, bookstores, gas, clothing, etc. 

Participants will receive a $50 gift card for participating in the World Café.

What are the possible risks and benefits of participating? 


The project has minimal risk and inconveniences for participants. We do not expect any physical risks for participating in this project. Although we do anticipate the potential for minimal emotional and psychological risks due to the discussion of marginalization and the social exclusion of people with disabilities across Canada. You are not required to answer questions or share your opinion about anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or that you do not want to answer.

Participants will benefit directly and indirectly from the proposed project. The direct benefit is the compensation we will be providing. The indirect benefits are participant experiences will also inform MODC’s continued program improvement and development. Additionally, the participants may feel empowered from being able to share their experiences with MODC and, if they choose to, with the broader community.

The Creating Inclusive Employment project is a multi-year research project that will examine digital skill development for young people with disabilities. The aim of the research project is to create more inclusive employment opportunities as young people transition from school into the workplace.

People with disabilities face significant barriers when seeking and gaining employment; today, the employment rate for people with disabilities in Canada sits more than 21% below the national average (1). This includes young people with disabilities who are transitioning from school to work (1). While there is some research discussing barriers to employment for young people with disabilities (2,3), the existing literature does not provide information specifically on the digital economy, which includes jobs that require digital skills. This represents a significant gap as 80% of Canadian business leaders are seeking more workers with digital skills (4); Canada is estimated to need two million new tech jobs by 2025 (4,5).

Given the current economic climate and the opportunities presented by this need, it is necessary that young people with disabilities are properly trained to successfully gain employment in Canada’s evolving economy. However, existing research is not clear on the ideal ways young people with disabilities can navigate the digital economy labour market. Thus, research to better understand how to enable and empower young people with disabilities to engage in the digital economy is essential.

The Creating Inclusive Employment project looks to answer the question: How can we create barrier-free, non-traditional digital skill development pathways for young people with disabilities in Canada?

To answer this question the project aims to:
  1. Understand the current challenges and opportunities young people with disabilities face when looking to gain or improve their digital skills.
  2. Identify the ideal ways young people with disabilities can build their digital skills, leading to employment.

To achieve these goals the project will use a community-based research approach. This is when community members and researchers work together in all stages of the project to make sure the research truly reflects the needs of the community. The Creating Inclusive Employment project team will work collaboratively with young people with disabilities and other people with lived experience, as well as our community partners, throughout the entire research process.
