TIMETM at Home Study

March of Dimes Canada is partnering with the University Health Network (UHN) and the University of Toronto to deliver a free online exercise program. TIMETM at Home is an online group exercise program for people with balance and mobility challenges, led by a group of students, physical therapists and researchers from the University of Toronto. The purpose of their study is to evaluate whether an online exercise program (TIMETM at Home) is beneficial for adults with balance and mobility challenges.

Is there a cost to participate?
No, there is no cost for the program as funding is provided through a grant. If you do not have an electronic device, such as a laptop or tablet, the program will loan you one for the study. You will also receive a $15 gift card after each evaluation.

What is the TIMETM at Home program?
TIMETM at Home is a group program where an exercise video is streamed using Zoom. You will join from your own home using an electronic device such as a laptop or tablet using the Internet. The exercise class is 1.5 hours, twice per week, for 8 weeks. You follow a 60-minute exercise video that includes a warm-up, functional exercises, and a cool-down. The exercises are aimed at improving balance and mobility (e.g., standing up and sitting down, lunging, stepping, walking). You are invited to join 15 minutes before and after the class to socially interact with other participants and discuss topics related to health and wellness.

This program is for:
Adults aged 18 years and older who live in the community, have balance and mobility challenges, but who can walk at least 10 metres (with or without a walking aid), and stand up and sit down from a chair, without the need for help or supervision.

What will you have to do?
You will participate in three evaluations at the start of the study, two months and five months after the start. You will do the evaluations in your home connected to a physical therapist using Zoom. You will complete tests of balance, leg strength and walking ability and answer questions about your ability to perform everyday activities. You will need a family member or friend to be present with you for the first evaluation. After the first evaluation, we will use a random process, like flipping a coin, to assign you to one of two groups. One group will start the TIMETM at Home program immediately, the other group will start the TIMETM at Home program 5 months later.
