TORONTO – Yesterday, Ontario’s Minister of Finance Hon. Peter Bethlenfalvy presented the Ford government’s 2022
Fall Economic Statement (FES). The economic update includes two long-awaited and important changes to the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), the province’s income support program for people with disabilities:
- ODSP recipients can expect their monthly deposits to increase in line with Canada’s average inflation rate each year. ODSP will be indexed to the annual average Consumer Price Index (CPI), beginning in July, 2023.
- ODSP’s earned income exemption is being increased from $200 per month to $1,000 per month; however, after the $1000 exemption is reached, ODSP will be reduced by 75 cents of each dollar earned.
March of Dimes Canada supports these important changes which will contribute to consistent financial and employment security for people with disabilities in Ontario, putting more money in the pockets of those who need it most.
“We often hear from our clients and community that ODSP’s $200 earnings exemption poses significant challenges to achieving financial security through consistent and meaningful employment,” said Len Baker, March of Dimes Canada’s President and Chief Executive Officer.
“Today’s announcement raising ODSP’s monthly earnings exemption to $1,000 each month will incentivize people with disabilities in Ontario who are able to work to enter or return to the labour market, increasing their income and employment security. I’d like to thank Ontario’s disability community for its tireless advocacy on this issue and offer my thanks to Premier Ford and Ministers Merrilee Fullerton and Peter Bethlenfalvy for delivering these important ODSP adjustments.”
