The Opportunity:
Our vision is for a world where stroke survivors, caregivers, and their families can progress and recover, find joy and fulfilment post-stroke and go on to live meaningful and connected lives. The “Stroke Community Conversation” peer support groups – part of our After Stroke Peer Support Network - provide survivors, caregivers, and their families with emotional support, encouragement, education resource information, and a sense of community after hospital discharge. The groups are safe spaces where individuals come together and share experiences, information and coping strategies.
The Peer Support Group Facilitator plays an essential role by facilitating a monthly in-person group discussion, providing guidance, encouragement and direction to group conversation, and focusing on fostering a supportive and empathetic environment. Our “Stroke Community Conversation” group in Charlottetown is an established group that has been meeting since 2023. We are looking for a volunteer able to take on facilitation of the group starting as soon as possible.
Time Commitment: 3-4 hours per month. Minimum 1-year commitment.
Locations: Charlottetown, PE (in-person)
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Facilitate and lead group discussion in a respectful, calm, and supportive manner
- Share your stroke journey, where appropriate, to provide encouragement
- Record and report group attendance to MODC Volunteer Engagement Coordinator
- Report any urgent concerns regarding group to Volunteer Engagement Coordinator
- Signpost, where appropriate, to MODC After Stroke program and community-based support programs
Skills and Experience
Lived experience of stroke, ideally at least one-year post-stroke (or far enough along in recovery journey to be confident in facilitating a group)
Reliability and self-direction; able to work independently
Strong interpersonal skills and an overall positive attitude
Respectfulness towards the values, cultural diversity, opinions, and ideas of others
