The Opportunity 

Graded Repetitive Arm Supplementary Program (GRASP) is designed to improve arm and hand strength, coordination, and the ability to use the stroke-affected arm in daily activities. The weekly virtual group sessions (10-week program) specifically target the upper extremity in those affected by a stroke or other neurological events.  It is supervised by staff and volunteers for one hour a week, while the participants are encouraged to complete an hour of independent work for one hour each other day of the week.  Being a Program Assistant volunteer provides a rewarding experience of making a significant impact on the lives of stroke survivors. As a volunteer you will develop specialized skills in working with this population, including knowledge of adaptive exercises and rehabilitation techniques. 

Location: Virtual
Time Commitment : 1.5 hours per week for 10 weeks

Tasks and Responsibilites:
 
  • Demonstrate exercises as directed by the program supervisor, ensuring participants understand each movement and its purpose
  • Monitor participants during the exercises, offering real-time feedback and adjustments to ensure safety and effectivenes
  • Provide encouragement and motivation to participants throughout the session to promote engagement and perseverance
  • Answer participant questions during the session, clarifying instructions and providing additional guidance as needed.
  • Independently observe 2-4 participants' performance and progress in a break out room, and communicate any concerns or observations to the supervising staff
  • Participate in post session debrief with fellow volunteers and Program Instructor
  • Complete required documentation on a weekly basis
  • Complete all assigned trainings 
  • Arrive 15 minutes before session to discuss any questions of homework assigned to participants 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  • Interest in rehabilitation, physical therapy, or working with stroke survivors
  • Basic knowledge of exercise principles, particularly related to the upper extremity, is considered an asset 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Access to a computer and reliable internet connection 
  • Ability to follow directions from the program supervisor and work collaboratively with the team
  • A commitment to the full duration of the 10-week program.
