The Opportunity 

We are currently looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to fill the role of a BeFriending Volunteer. BeFriending volunteers are matched with local adults with disabilities with the goal of providing them with social companionship and stimulation with reducing isolation. The volunteer will help expand the clients circle of friends while engaging in social recreational type activities within their community. The volunteer and client may participate in activities that include but are not limited to, spending time over shared interests such as watching movies, going to sporting events, chatting over a cup of coffee, visiting local malls, and engaging in other leisure activities

Location: Niagara Region or Virtual
Time Commitment : 5-10 hours per month. Minimum one year commitment.  

Tasks and Responsilbilites:
 
  • Maintain regular communication with client (s): at minimum once a week via email, phone or in-person social event per month 
  • Establish a trusting and supportive relationship with client(s) 
  • Record and report volunteer hours on the volunteer time log monthly - include time spent calling, emailing, and visiting client(s) 
  • Communicate any changes, issues, or inconsistent communication patterns to staff liaison in an effective and timely manner. 

Knowledge, Skills and Expereince:
  • Previous volunteer experience
  • Reliable, collaborative, empathetic and patient
  • Familiarity with challenges faced by individuals with physical disabilities and acquired brain injuries  
  • Access to a computer and reliable internet connection (for virtual roles)
  • Experience in social services field considered an asset
