Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan: Peer Support Group Starter

The Opportunity 

March of Dimes Canada is looking to start Peer Support Groups for stroke survivors and caregivers in various locations across Canada. We are seeking ‘Peer Support Group Starters’ to help initiate and establish these groups. These volunteer roles are crucial in expanding the reach of peer support and ensuring stroke survivors have the resources they need during their stroke recovery journey. The Peer Support Group Starters will use the Peer Support Toolkit and work closely with the Peer Support Coordinator to launch successful new groups across Canada.  

Location: Ontario (Ottawa and surrounding area), Saskatchewan (Regina and rural communities), Manitoba (Brandon and rural communities), Alberta (Red Deer, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray) 
Time Commitment : Approx.10 hours per month.

Tasks and Responsilbilites:

  • Communicate regularly with the Peer Support Coordinator to provide community context and input on key aspects of starting a new peer support group.  
  • Work with the Peer Support Coordinator to develop a plan for the creation and launch of a new group, including timelines and resources needed using the Peer Support Toolkit.  
  • Build interest in and support for a new group by establishing relationships with relevant stakeholders who can support outreach to potential volunteers and group members. 
  • Promote the new peer support group through various channels, including personal social networks and community partnerships.  

Knowledge, Skills and Expereince:
  • Strong understanding of the community's needs and available resources. 
  • Reliable communication and planning skills. 
  • Passion for creating a difference in a community. 
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office software and videoconferencing applications.
