HVMP – What We Fund

There is no guarantee for funding upon application to HVMP. Funding will depend on the dollars available and eligibility of the request. Applications will be prioritized based on the assessed needs of the applicant. 

Please also note that the HVMP Program will not approve reimbursement of any cost for modifications, adaptations, and devices prior to authorization from the program.

The HVMP provides funding for basic and essential solutions directly addressing physical barriers within a home explicitly related to an applicant's disability and current mobility restrictions as recommended by an Occupational Therapist.

1. Devices and Adaptations

HVMP Devices and Adaptations Information Package

Assistive Devices

  • Essential devices that help with basic activities of daily living, such as bathing, toileting, and transferring, directly address physical barriers within the home that relate to the applicant's disability and current mobility limitations.
  • Floor patient lifts and Ceiling Track Lifts.
  • Environmental controls (e.g., operate appliances; switch lights and computers on or off; facilitate the use of a telephone; or to open, close and lock doors).
  • Repairs to eligible electrical/battery-operated equipment eligible through the HVMP.

Home Adaptations

  • Modular ramps (concrete ramps are not eligible)
  • Vertical platform lifts (not eligible in rental situations)
  • Stairlifts 
  • Ceiling track lifts
  • Tub cut-outs
  • Automatic door openers
  • Portable roll-in shower
  • Tub-slider system (with and without tilt)

2. Home Modifications (Construction)

HVMP Home Modifications Information Package

Home Modification
  • Widening of doors and/or replacement of conventional doors with sliding or folding doors.
  • Rearrangement, lowering or raising of kitchen equipment and cupboards.
  • Wet room with universal design principles.
     
Eligible Wet Room Requests includes: 
  • Door widening
  • Zero-threshold shower (no step-in or lip)
  • Waterproof shower panels (no tiles or grout)
  • Grab bars
  • Handheld shower on a slide bar
  • Anti-slip flooring (vinyl or ceramic tiles only)
  • Wheelchair accessible sink
  • Accessible toilet
Funding is only available for zero-threshold, roll-in showers. If your bathroom can't fit this type of shower, the program will instead cover portable bathing equipment, such as a roll-in shower unit or a tub sliding system.

During construction, if any issues arise such as but not limited to water damage, mold, mildew, termites, items not to provincial code or safety standards, any electrical or plumbing issues those are the responsibility of the homeowner, not March of Dimes Canada.

3. Vehicle Modifications

HVMP Vehicle Modifications Information Package

Driving Controls

Hand Controls
  • Push/Pull, Push/Twist, Push/Rock systems allow drivers to operate the accelerator and brake using their hands.
Left-Foot Accelerators
  • Enable drivers with right leg limitations to control the accelerator with their left foot.
Pedal Extensions
  • Brings pedals closer to the driver for easier reach, useful for individuals with limited leg mobility.
Steering Aids
  • Spinner Knobs: Allow one-handed steering.
  • Amputee Rings: Attach to the steering wheel for prosthetic use.
  • Steering Wheel Extensions: Bring the wheel closer to the driver.
Secondary Controls
  • Operate lights, wipers, horn, and other functions via hand-operated switches.

Seating & Transfer Solutions

Swivel Seats
  • Rotate outward to ease entry and exit from the vehicle.
  • Power Transfer Seats
  • Electrically move and rotate to assist wheelchair users in transferring to the driver or passenger seat.
Transfer Boards & Hoists
  • Help with manual or powered transfer from wheelchair to car seat.
Person Lift
  • Patient transfers from a wheelchair into the vehicle.

Wheelchair Accessibility & Storage

Wheelchair Lifts & Ramps
  • Installed in vans or SUVs to allow entry while seated in a wheelchair.
Wheelchair Hoists
  • Lift to store wheelchairs or scooters in the trunk or roof box.
Lowered Floor Conversions
  • Common in Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs), allowing users to remain in their wheelchair while traveling.
