Legislative Branch – Provincial / Territorial and Municipal

At the provincial or territorial level, the legislative branch looks quite similar to the federal.
  • Monarch: King Charles III is the head of state in each province, represented by a Lieutenant Governor.

  • Legislative Assembly: Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are elected by voters to represent different areas of the country called constituencies. Most provinces and territories call their elected officials MLAs, with a few exceptions:
    • Newfoundland and Labrador: Members of the House of Assembly (MHAs)

    • Ontario: Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs)

    • Quebec: Members of the National Assembly (MNAs)

  • Like at the federal level, there are also legislative committees, legislative staff and constituency staff.

At the municipal level, governments can look quite different. But usually, the legislative branch will include City, Town, or Regional Councillors, who are elected to represent their local communities.
